The data
Where the adverts come from
We read public adverts on these sites and link to every one. We never copy descriptions; photos load from the site that published them.
How we compare prices
Price only, not condition.
We compare each car with similar cars for sale now: the same model and fuel, within 1 year and 20,000 miles of it. When there are fewer than 8, we widen that to 2 years and 35,000 miles. We adjust the others’ prices for the small differences in age and mileage, and the middle of them is the typical price. The car’s price against that typical price gives one of five words (the percentages allow for how widely the similar cars’ prices spread):
- Great price 15% to 40% under the typical price.
- Good price 5% to 15% under.
- Fair price Within 5% either way.
- High price 5% or more over.
- Check carefully 40% or more under. Something may be wrong with the car or the advert: ask before you go.
Some cars get no word: write-offs, cars with fewer than 5 similar cars, adverts without a mileage or a year, and adverts that may be for another model. They are still shown. The car’s condition, history, extras and the seller are not part of the comparison, and nobody pays to change it. The thresholds may change as we learn from real prices.
One car, several sites
When the same car is advertised on more than one site, it is shown once, at its lowest price, with a link to every advert: “Also on” tells you where else it is. We only join two adverts when the details agree closely (the model, year, mileage, price and seller), and we never join a private sale with a dealer’s. When in doubt we keep them apart, so a car may occasionally appear twice, but two different cars are never shown as one.
